Board of Directors Elections

OPIRG Brock is electing a new Board of Directors. Our board is responsible for deciding what big research projects and events we take on, managing our two staff members and making all financial decisions for our chapter. The board operates under the mandate of anti-oppression and comes to all their decisions through the method of consensus decision making. This ensures that we provide an inclusive and fully participatory environment where everyone feels empowered to articulate their ideas.

Volunteering on our board of directors provides students and community members with valuable experience managing and administrating a not-for-profit organization. If you are interested in employment prospects in the not-for-profit sector, sitting on our board is extremely helpful for future opportunities.

Sitting on the board involves attending biweekly meetings, as well as taking responsibility for one of nine portfolios. The nine portfolios are: BUSU/BUSCI relations, Finance, Staff relations, Provincial Representative, Resource centre management, Publicity and media outreach, Correspondence (letter writing campaign, petitions etc), Fundraising, Downtown Infoshop liaison.

If you are interesting in applying, please find a nomination form at opirgbrock.org/forms . Also, please submit your answers to the following questions:

1. What experience do you have volunteering with OPIRG? ( or generally in the non-profit sector if you are new to OPIRG)
2. How do you feel about consensus decision making?
3. What issues do you feel should be at the forefront of OPIRG Brock’s research?
4. Explain public interest research.
5. What portfolio are you most interested in and why?

Applications are due by September 30th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at opirgbu@gmail.com or call 905 688-5550 x 4430.

Unprotected by the police and ignored by their government, they prepare to face down the invaders on their own. Their resistance ultimately leads to a remarkable and dangerous stand off between farmers and a band of armed paramilitaries deep in the cloud forest. Radical Infoshop Coordinator
OPIRG Brock, St Catharines Ontario

OPIRG Brock is hiring a part-time employee to help set up and manage our downtown infoshop; a satellite project of our campus resource centre. This is a six month contract position with possible renewal pending grant monies and fundraising opportunities.

ABOUT OPIRG BROCK
OPIRG-Brock is a non-profit, student-funded and student-directed organization, which encourages and supports research, education and action on social justice and environmental issues. The Brock University chapter was formed by the student body in 1988 and is one of eleven chapters in Ontario. OPIRG-Brock is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up of Brock students and members of the community who are elected at an Annual General Meeting. Working collectively, making decisions by consensus in an inclusive and fully participatory environment. The Resource Centre, as well as all OPIRG events are open to students and members of the surrounding community.
Our mandate is research, education and action. We conduct research in the public interest on topics of social and environmental concern. We use education to raise awareness of public issues and mobilize public opinion. Action is performed to develop and implement strategies to reach our goals. OPIRG-Brock provides the tools and resources for Brock students and community members to bridge the gap between theory and practice in order to lead our community away from self-destruction.

Critical Mass St. Catharines!

What: Critical Mass is a monthly community bicycle ride that seeks to raise awareness about cycling in our community. It is an act of community building, a rallying call for a city dedicated to sustainable transportation, and most importantly an opportunity to meet folk who love bikes!

When : the last friday of every month.
NEXT MASS IS JULY 31 at 6:00 pm!!!

Where: Montebello Park

Why: Because our city streets are not bicycle friendly.Because cyclists' safety is perpetually in jeopardy when we attempt to share the roads with cars. Because every cyclist I know that uses their bike as their primary means of transportation has been hit by a car at least once. Because these accidents result in life altering disabilities and the death of our loved ones. Because cyclists continue to be targeted by the police. Because mother earth can only tolerate so much petrol-fueled pollution.

BECAUSE CYCLING TOGETHER IS EMPOWERING!

The Rules: there are no rules!!!! except those that we collectively agree to at the beginning of each ride through consensus decision making. Some things that are usually discussed include what route will be followed, how many lanes we will occupy and the delegation of safety roles.

Fun Facts about Critical Mass

Although in Stolkholm Sweden, community bike rides that drew 100s of people were common in the 70s, the politisized version of critical mass begun on Friday September 25, 1992 in San Francisco.

Originally the event was known as a “Commute Clot”...which, well didn't really catch on!
